3 Beaches, 3 vibes

What are you looking for in a beach?

Here are three beaches that are easy to reach from Citta Sant'Angelo, and all are located along the highly bikeable Via Verde that follows the coastline.

Each offers something different.

Torre del Cerrano (Pineto)

If you can only visit one beach, make it this one.

When you have passed Silvi, watch for the underpass and turn there. Park in the lot (6,00/day in 2024) and trek under the train trestle, taking care not to disturb the dunes. Stake out your spot on the beach and enjoy the vigorous waves that are not aggressive, just life-affirming. The water does not get deep until very far out, and the view spans the surrounding hills and their horses, passing trains, distant buildings of Montesilvano and Pescara, and of course, the tower itself.

Torre del Cerrano was build as a watchtower against pirates and other seafaring attackers who might set their sights on the nearby ancient town of Silvi paese. For a small fee you can visit the tower's museum and top terrace and learn its history.

To stretch your legs, walk past the tower and through the pines to the town of Pineto where you can find refreshments. Food and treats are also sold at the tower or the campground near the trestle. Or buy a ciambella (huge, sugary donut) from one of the beach vendors -- surprisingly perfect for a day at the beach!

Lungomare (Montesilvano)

This is reachable by TUA bus. The waves here tend to be gentle and the water shallow even on windy days, thanks to the breakwater structures that the town maintains. Street parking is free but may require patience to find. Remember pedestrians and bikers always have the right-of-way.

After enjoying the sun, sand, and water, rinse off at one of several public water fountains, then look for our favorite gelateria, the fabulous Alike.

When you first approach the lungomare it may seem like all entrances are private, but be persistent. Every block or so, there is a gap to let in the public who are not customers of the restaurants or umbrella concessionaires. You have every right to enjoy the beach for free!

Punta Ferruccio (Ortona)

This is a bit of a drive, as it's south of Pescara as you approach Ortona. Park for free in the parking lot, then wear your tennies for the hike down and back up. The beach itself is beautiful -- wild and rocky and usually not very populated.

You can make a day of it by visiting the cute marina at Ortona then visiting a trabocchi restaurant.
